What do you look at first when a company announces a stock split?

I'm still learning, so forgive me if I have the basics off. From what I've read, a stock split means a company divides its existing shares into more shares, so each share costs less and the total value stays the same. I'm not sure yet whether that by itself changes anything about the business. I also saw people mention that splits are sometimes followed by price moves, but I don't know if that's common or just a story people tell. It seems hard to separate the split from everything else happening at the same time. When a split is announced, what is the first thing you check so you know it's just a change in share count and not a signal about the business?
